Description

A traditional British comfort dish featuring savory ground meat and mixed vegetables simmered in a rich sauce, topped with creamy mashed potatoes and baked until golden brown.

Ingredients

Meat Mixture

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef or lamb
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup mixed vegetables (peas, carrots)
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Topping

  • 2 cups mashed potatoes
  • 1 tbsp butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) to ensure it’s ready for baking the shepherd’s pie later.
  2. Cook Meat and Aromatics: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef or lamb along with the chopped onion and minced garlic until the meat is browned and the onions are translucent.
  3. Add Vegetables and Flavorings: Stir in the mixed vegetables, tomato paste, and beef broth into the browned meat mixture.
  4. Simmer: Allow the mixture to simmer gently for about 10 minutes, until the sauce thickens slightly and the flavors meld together.
  5. Assemble: Transfer the meat and vegetable filling to a baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
  6. Add Mashed Potato Topping: Evenly spread the mashed potatoes on top of the meat mixture, then dot the surface with bits of butter to encourage browning.
  7. Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until the mashed potato topping is golden and slightly crispy.
  8. Rest and Serve: Remove from oven and let the shepherd’s pie cool slightly before serving to allow it to set.

Notes

  • Traditionally made with lamb, but ground beef can be used as a delicious alternative.
  • For extra flavor, consider mixing some grated cheese into the mashed potatoes before spreading on top.
