Description
A traditional British comfort dish featuring savory ground meat and mixed vegetables simmered in a rich sauce, topped with creamy mashed potatoes and baked until golden brown.
Ingredients
Meat Mixture
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef or lamb
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup mixed vegetables (peas, carrots)
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- Salt and pepper to taste
Topping
- 2 cups mashed potatoes
- 1 tbsp butter
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) to ensure it’s ready for baking the shepherd’s pie later.
- Cook Meat and Aromatics: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef or lamb along with the chopped onion and minced garlic until the meat is browned and the onions are translucent.
- Add Vegetables and Flavorings: Stir in the mixed vegetables, tomato paste, and beef broth into the browned meat mixture.
- Simmer: Allow the mixture to simmer gently for about 10 minutes, until the sauce thickens slightly and the flavors meld together.
- Assemble: Transfer the meat and vegetable filling to a baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
- Add Mashed Potato Topping: Evenly spread the mashed potatoes on top of the meat mixture, then dot the surface with bits of butter to encourage browning.
- Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until the mashed potato topping is golden and slightly crispy.
- Rest and Serve: Remove from oven and let the shepherd’s pie cool slightly before serving to allow it to set.
Notes
- Traditionally made with lamb, but ground beef can be used as a delicious alternative.
- For extra flavor, consider mixing some grated cheese into the mashed potatoes before spreading on top.
