Description

Pizza Grilled Cheese combines the crispy, buttery bread of a classic grilled cheese with the irresistible flavors of pizza. Filled with melted mozzarella, marinara sauce, pepperoni, and Italian herbs, it’s a quick and comforting meal the whole family will love.

Ingredients

Bread and Butter

  • 8 slices sourdough or sandwich bread
  • 2 tbsp butter, softened

Cheese and Sauce

  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup pizza or marinara sauce

Toppings and Seasonings

  • 16 slices pepperoni
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh basil
  • Red pepper flakes, optional

Instructions

  1. Prepare the bread: Spread butter evenly on one side of each slice of bread to ensure a golden, crispy exterior when grilled.
  2. Assemble the sandwich base: Lay four slices of bread butter-side down on a clean surface, forming the base for each sandwich.
  3. Add the sauce: Spread a thin, even layer of marinara or pizza sauce over each slice of bread to provide authentic pizza flavor.
  4. Add cheeses and toppings: Sprinkle shredded mozzarella and Parmesan cheese over the sauce, then layer with pepperoni slices and fresh basil for extra flavor and texture.
  5. Season: Sprinkle Italian seasoning and garlic powder evenly over the fillings, adding optional red pepper flakes if desired for a spicy kick.
  6. Top the sandwiches: Place the remaining bread slices on top of each sandwich, butter side up, to prepare for grilling.
  7. Heat the skillet: Preheat a skillet or frying pan over medium-low heat to allow gentle cooking that melts cheese without burning bread.
  8. Grill the sandwiches: Place the assembled sandwiches in the skillet and cook for 3 to 4 minutes on each side. Press gently with a spatula to help the sandwich cook evenly and cheese to melt thoroughly.
  9. Rest and serve: Remove sandwiches from skillet and let them rest for 1 to 2 minutes to set the melted cheese, then slice and serve with extra warm marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • Cook over medium-low heat to allow the cheese to melt completely before the bread becomes too dark or charred.
  • Add mushrooms, olives, bell peppers, or cooked sausage to vary pizza flavors and customize the sandwich.
  • Use a combination of mozzarella and provolone cheese for an extra cheesy and melty texture.
  • Serve the grilled cheese sandwiches immediately for the best crispy texture and flavor.
