Description
Pajeon is a classic Korean savory pancake made primarily with green onions and a light, smooth batter. It features a crispy exterior with a soft, flavorful interior, making it an ideal snack or side dish that pairs wonderfully with dipping sauces.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup green onions (scallions), cut into strips
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for frying)
Instructions
- Prepare the batter: In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, water, egg, and salt. Whisk the ingredients together thoroughly until you achieve a smooth, lump-free batter.
- Add green onions: Gently fold the cut green onions into the batter, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout.
- Heat the pan: Place a non-stick or cast-iron skillet over medium heat and add the vegetable oil, allowing it to heat but not smoke.
- Cook the pancake: Pour the batter into the hot pan and spread it evenly into a circular shape about 1/4-inch thick. Cook the pancake for 3 to 4 minutes or until the bottom turns golden brown and crispy.
- Flip the pancake: Carefully flip the pancake using a spatula and cook the opposite side for another 3 to 4 minutes until it is also golden and crispy.
- Serve: Remove the cooked pancake from the pan and serve it hot, ideally with a soy sauce-based dipping sauce on the side.
Notes
- Serve with soy sauce dipping sauce to enhance the flavors.
- Add thin slices of chili pepper into the batter or as a topping for a spicy kick.
- For a crispier texture, use a mix of vegetable oil and sesame oil when frying.
- Can be customized by adding seafood like shrimp or squid for Haemul Pajeon variation.
