Description

Salisbury Steak is a beloved American comfort food featuring tender ground beef patties seasoned with aromatic herbs and spices, simmered in a savory mushroom and onion gravy. This hearty dish pairs perfectly with mashed potatoes, rice, or roasted vegetables, making it an easy, satisfying meal for any family dinner.

Ingredients

For the Patties

  • 1½ lbs (680 g) ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup finely diced onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper

For the Gravy

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1 tbsp butter

Instructions

  1. Prepare the meat mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, diced onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined to avoid toughening the meat.
  2. Form the patties: Shape the mixture into 4 to 6 oval-shaped patties, ensuring they are uniform for even cooking.
  3. Brown the patties: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side until nicely browned. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  4. Cook the vegetables: In the same skillet, add butter, then add the sliced onions and mushrooms. Sauté for 5 to 7 minutes until softened and lightly browned, enhancing their flavor.
  5. Deglaze and add broth: Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, scraping up any browned bits from the pan bottom to enrich the gravy.
  6. Simmer the patties: Return the browned patties to the skillet. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes until the patties are cooked through and tender.
  7. Thicken the gravy: Mix the cornstarch and water in a small bowl to create a slurry. Stir this into the skillet and simmer for another 1 to 2 minutes until the gravy thickens to a luscious consistency.
  8. Serve: Spoon the mushroom and onion gravy generously over the Salisbury steaks. Serve hot alongside mashed potatoes, rice, or roasted vegetables for a complete meal.

Notes

  • Avoid overmixing the beef mixture to keep the patties tender and juicy.
  • For a richer gravy, add a splash of heavy cream at the end of cooking.
  • Let the patties rest for a few minutes before serving to allow juices to redistribute.
