Description

Hibachi Steak is a restaurant-inspired favorite featuring tender bite-sized sirloin steak seared on a hot griddle with garlic butter and a savory soy-based sauce. Paired perfectly with sautéed vegetables and optional fried rice, this easy-to-make dish delivers authentic Japanese steakhouse flavors straight to your kitchen in just 20 minutes.

Ingredients

Steak and Sauce

  • 1½ lbs sirloin steak, cut into bite-sized cubes
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp teriyaki sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • ½ tsp black pepper

Optional Vegetables

  • 2 zucchini, sliced
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced

Garnish

  • Sliced green onions
  • Sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Preheat the griddle or skillet: Heat a Blackstone griddle or large skillet over medium-high heat until hot enough to sear the steak.
  2. Sear the steak: Add the vegetable oil to the hot surface and place the sirloin steak cubes on it. Let them cook undisturbed for 2–3 minutes to develop a nice sear.
  3. Flip the steak: Turn the steak pieces over to cook the other side for another 2–3 minutes until browned and cooked to your preferred doneness.
  4. Add butter and garlic: Lower the heat slightly, add the butter and minced garlic to the griddle, stirring or tossing until the garlic is fragrant and the butter has melted.
  5. Make the sauce: Pour in low-sodium soy sauce, teriyaki sauce, and sesame oil over the steak. Toss everything thoroughly to evenly coat the steak with the flavorful sauce.
  6. Cook the vegetables (optional): Using the same griddle or skillet, cook the sliced zucchini, onion, and mushrooms separately until tender-crisp, usually about 4–5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. Garnish and serve: Transfer the steak and vegetables to plates and garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds for added flavor and presentation.

Notes

  • Cook the steak to your preferred level of doneness, adjusting time as needed.
  • Other steak cuts like ribeye or New York strip work well for this recipe.
  • Pair this hibachi steak with fried rice and yum yum sauce for the full Japanese steakhouse experience.
