Description

A cozy, old-fashioned casserole layered with tender potatoes, savory ground beef, and creamy mushroom sauce — hearty, simple, and satisfying, perfect for a comforting family dinner.

Ingredients

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 4 medium potatoes, thinly sliced

Dairy and Sauce

  • 1 can (10 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Seasonings

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 375 °F (190 °C) to prepare for baking the casserole.
  2. Brown Beef and Onion: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion together until the beef is fully browned and the onions are softened. Drain excess fat to keep the casserole from being greasy.
  3. Mix Sauce: In a bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup and milk, stirring until the mixture is smooth and evenly blended.
  4. Layer Ingredients: Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. Arrange a layer of thinly sliced potatoes on the bottom, followed by the browned beef and onion mixture, then pour over the soup and milk mixture evenly.
  5. Bake Covered: Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, allowing the potatoes to soften and flavors to meld.
  6. Add Cheese and Finish Baking: Remove the foil, sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top, then return the casserole to the oven uncovered and bake for an additional 15 minutes or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and slightly browned.

Notes

  • Add frozen peas to the layers for a pop of color and added nutrition.
  • Try substituting cream of chicken soup for cream of mushroom soup if you prefer a milder, less earthy flavor.
