Description

This rich and savory French Onion Beef Casserole combines seasoned ground beef, tender egg noodles, and classic French onion soup flavors, layered with creamy mushroom soup and melted mozzarella and Swiss cheeses for the ultimate comforting and hearty dinner.

Ingredients

Meat and Broth

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ½ cup beef broth

Soups and Dairy

  • 1 packet French onion soup mix
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup (10.5 oz)
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • 1 tbsp butter

Pasta

  • 12 oz egg noodles

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the casserole later.
  2. Cook Noodles: Cook the egg noodles according to package directions until al dente, then drain and set aside.
  3. Brown Beef: In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef until fully cooked, breaking it up as it cooks, then drain any excess grease.
  4. Simmer Beef with Soup Mix: Stir the French onion soup mix and beef broth into the cooked beef, then let it simmer on low heat for 3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  5. Combine Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, cooked egg noodles, and the beef mixture; stir well to evenly distribute all components.
  6. Assemble in Baking Dish: Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and transfer the combined mixture into it, spreading evenly.
  7. Add Cheese and Butter: Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella and Swiss cheeses evenly over the top of the casserole, then dot the surface with small pieces of butter.
  8. Bake: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake uncovered for 25 to 30 minutes, until the casserole is hot, bubbly, and the cheese has melted and slightly browned.
  9. Rest and Serve: Remove from oven and let the casserole rest for 5 minutes to set before serving.

Notes

  • Gruyère cheese can be substituted for Swiss cheese to enhance the authentic French onion flavor.
  • Garnish the casserole with fresh parsley before serving for a burst of color and freshness.
  • You can prepare the casserole in advance and freeze it before baking for up to 2 months; thaw before baking.
