Ingredients
Beef and Seasonings
- 1 lb (450 g) lean ground beef
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
Pasta and Liquids
- 2 cups elbow macaroni, uncooked
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 cup milk
- 1 (8 oz) can tomato sauce
Cheese and Oil
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Instructions
- Heat olive oil: In a large skillet over medium heat, warm the olive oil until shimmering to prepare for sautéing the aromatics.
- Sauté onion and garlic: Add the diced onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes, then stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 1 minute until fragrant.
- Brown the ground beef: Add the lean ground beef to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until browned and no longer pink, about 6-8 minutes. Drain excess fat from the skillet to keep the dish lean.
- Add liquids and seasonings: Stir in the beef broth, milk, tomato sauce, paprika, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to combine all the flavors.
- Cook macaroni: Add the uncooked elbow macaroni to the skillet. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, then cover the skillet with a lid.
- Simmer pasta: Cook covered for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking, until the macaroni is tender and has absorbed most of the liquid.
- Incorporate cheese: Remove the skillet from heat, and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until melted and creamy, creating a rich sauce that coats the pasta and beef evenly.
- Serve: Serve the hamburger helper macaroni hot, straight from the skillet for a comforting and hearty meal.
Notes
- Add peas or broccoli for extra vegetables and nutrition.
- Use ground turkey as a leaner alternative to ground beef.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
- For a spicier variation, consider adding a pinch of cayenne pepper or chili flakes.
- To make it creamier, stir in a tablespoon of cream or sour cream before serving.
