Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 2 lbs thinly sliced beef chuck or sirloin
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, sliced
- 8 oz mushrooms, sliced (optional)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup beef broth
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 6 hoagie rolls
- 6–8 slices provolone cheese
Instructions
- Prepare ingredients: Begin by thinly slicing the beef chuck or sirloin, onion, bell pepper, and if using, mushrooms. Mince the garlic cloves thoroughly to release maximum flavor.
- Combine in crockpot: Place the sliced beef, onion, bell pepper, mushrooms, and minced garlic into the crockpot. This layering allows the flavors to meld during cooking.
- Add liquids and seasoning: Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce over the ingredients. Sprinkle Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper evenly across the mixture. Gently stir everything together to combine.
- Slow cook: Cover the crockpot and cook on LOW for 6–7 hours or on HIGH for 3–4 hours, until the beef is fork-tender and all flavors are fully developed.
- Toast hoagie rolls: When the cooking time is almost complete, split the hoagie rolls lengthwise and lightly toast them to add a slight crunch and prevent sogginess from the filling.
- Assemble sandwiches: Fill each toasted hoagie roll generously with the beef and vegetable mixture. Top each sandwich with 1–2 slices of provolone cheese for that classic cheesesteak taste.
- Melt cheese: Place the assembled sandwiches under the broiler for 1–2 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Watch carefully to avoid burning.
- Serve: Serve the sandwiches immediately with some of the reserved cooking juices on the side for dipping, enhancing each bite’s flavor and juiciness.
Notes
- Thinly sliced beef works best and becomes especially tender during slow cooking.
- Provolone is classic, but mozzarella or American cheese can also be used.
- Add sliced banana peppers or hot peppers for extra flavor and a spicy kick.
- Store leftover filling in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- To save time, you can purchase pre-sliced beef at the butcher or supermarket.
- Broiling the sandwiches is optional but recommended for melting cheese perfectly.
