Description

This BBQ Tofu features crispy edges and a tender inside, coated with a smoky, sweet, and tangy barbecue sauce. It serves as a quick, flavorful plant-based main dish ideal for bowls, sandwiches, wraps, or served alongside roasted veggies.

Ingredients

For the Tofu

  • 14 oz (400 g) extra-firm tofu
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

For the BBQ Sauce

  • ½ cup BBQ sauce
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce (optional)

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu: Drain and press the tofu for at least 15 minutes to remove excess moisture. Then cut it into cubes or thick strips.
  2. Season the tofu: Place the tofu pieces in a bowl and gently toss with olive oil, cornstarch, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper until evenly coated.
  3. Make the BBQ sauce: In a separate bowl, mix together BBQ sauce, maple syrup or honey, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and hot sauce if using.
  4. Cook the tofu: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the tofu and cook for 8–10 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crisp on multiple sides.
  5. Add the BBQ sauce: Reduce heat to medium-low. Pour the prepared BBQ sauce over the tofu, toss gently to coat, and cook for an additional 2–3 minutes until the sauce thickens to a glossy finish.
  6. Serve: Serve the BBQ tofu hot alongside rice, roasted vegetables, salad, coleslaw, or use it as a filling for sandwiches and wraps.

Notes

  • For extra crispy tofu, bake at 425°F (220°C) for 25–30 minutes, flipping halfway through, then toss with the BBQ sauce.
  • Pressing the tofu is essential to remove moisture and improve crispiness.
  • Use vegan BBQ sauce and maple syrup to keep this recipe fully vegan.
