Description

Tender chicken breasts smothered in a rich, creamy gravy made with garlic, onions, and savory seasonings. This comforting one-pan dinner is perfect for busy weeknights and pairs beautifully with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables.

Ingredients

Chicken

  • 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Sauce

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup grated parmesan cheese
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Season Chicken: Season chicken breasts evenly with garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper to ensure flavor penetration.
  2. Sear Chicken: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the chicken breasts for 4–5 minutes on each side until they develop a golden brown crust. Remove the chicken and set aside to rest.
  3. Sauté Onions and Garlic: In the same skillet, melt butter and add sliced onions. Cook until they become soft and translucent. Add minced garlic and cook for another 1 minute, stirring frequently to prevent burning.
  4. Create Roux and Add Liquids: Sprinkle flour over the cooked onions and garlic, stirring constantly for about 30 seconds to cook out the raw flour taste. Slowly whisk in the chicken broth and heavy cream until the sauce is fully smooth and begins to thicken.
  5. Add Cheese and Simmer Sauce: Stir in grated Parmesan cheese for richness and continue simmering the sauce until it has thickened to a creamy consistency.
  6. Simmer Chicken in Sauce: Return the seared chicken breasts to the skillet and spoon the creamy sauce over them. Cover the skillet and let it simmer on low heat for 10 minutes, allowing the chicken to cook through and absorb the flavors.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle freshly chopped parsley over the chicken for a burst of color and freshness. Serve the creamy smothered chicken warm alongside mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables for a satisfying meal.

Notes

  • Use chicken thighs instead of breasts for a juicier and more flavorful result.
  • Add mushrooms or spinach during the sauce preparation for a more hearty variation.
  • This dish is best served over creamy mashed potatoes or steamed rice to soak up the delicious gravy.
