Description

Chicken Divan is a classic American casserole combining tender cooked chicken and steamed broccoli tossed in a creamy, cheesy sauce made with cream of chicken soup, sour cream, and mayonnaise. Baked until bubbly and golden, it’s a comforting and satisfying dinner favorite that’s simple to prepare.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 2 cups cooked chicken (shredded or cubed)
  • 3 cups broccoli florets (steamed)
  • 1 can cream of chicken soup
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

Optional Topping

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tbsp butter (melted)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) to prepare for baking the casserole.
  2. Prepare Broccoli Layer: Grease a baking dish lightly and evenly spread the steamed broccoli florets at the bottom.
  3. Add Chicken: Evenly layer the cooked, shredded or cubed chicken over the broccoli in the baking dish.
  4. Make Sauce: In a mixing bowl, combine the cream of chicken soup, sour cream, mayonnaise, milk, garlic powder, and black pepper. Stir well until smooth.
  5. Combine and Pour Sauce: Pour the creamy sauce evenly over the chicken and broccoli layers, ensuring everything is well coated.
  6. Add Cheese: Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese and grated Parmesan evenly on top of the sauce-covered chicken and broccoli.
  7. Optional Breadcrumb Topping: If using, mix the melted butter with breadcrumbs and sprinkle this mixture evenly over the cheese layer for added crunch.
  8. Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes until the casserole is bubbly and the top is golden brown.
  9. Rest and Serve: Remove the casserole from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes to set before serving.

Notes

  • Use rotisserie chicken for convenience and time-saving.
  • Serve the casserole over cooked rice to make it a more filling meal.
  • For a lighter alternative, substitute Greek yogurt in place of sour cream.
