A creamy and hearty shrimp chowder packed with tender shrimp, potatoes, onions, and celery, simmered in a flavorful broth and enriched with milk and cream for a comforting and satisfying meal.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 celery stalks, chopped
- 2 cups diced potatoes
- 2 cups chicken or seafood broth
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 200 g shrimp, peeled and chopped
- 1/2 tsp thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh chives for garnish
Instructions
- Sauté Vegetables: Melt butter in a pot over medium heat and add the chopped onion and celery. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Cook Potatoes: Add the diced potatoes and pour in the chicken or seafood broth. Bring to a simmer and cook until the potatoes are tender, about 15 minutes.
- Add Dairy and Seasonings: Stir in the milk, heavy cream, and thyme. Continue to heat gently without boiling to combine the flavors.
- Cook Shrimp: Add the peeled and chopped shrimp to the pot and cook until they turn pink and are cooked through, about 3-5 minutes.
- Season and Garnish: Season the chowder with salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with fresh chives before serving for added flavor and color.
Notes
- Add corn kernels for extra sweetness and a pleasant texture contrast.
- Substitute half-and-half for heavy cream for a lighter version of the chowder.
- Use seafood broth for a more intense seafood flavor or chicken broth for a milder taste.
- Serve with crusty bread for a complete meal.
