Description

This Chocolate Peanut Butter Puppy Chow is a delightful, crunchy snack featuring rice cereal coated in a rich blend of melted chocolate, creamy peanut butter, and butter, then dusted with powdered sugar. Known also as muddy buddies, this no-bake treat is perfect for parties, holidays, movie nights, and gifting, offering a sweet and satisfying bite that’s easy to prepare and loved by all ages.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 9 cups rice cereal squares (Chex-style cereal)
  • 1½ cups (180g) powdered sugar

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup (170g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup (125g) creamy peanut butter
  • ¼ cup (60g) unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cereal: Place 9 cups of rice cereal squares in a large mixing bowl, ensuring there is enough room to coat them evenly with the chocolate mixture.
  2. Melt Chocolate Mixture: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, ½ cup creamy peanut butter, and ¼ cup unsalted butter. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each until the mixture is smooth and fully combined.
  3. Add Vanilla: Stir 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract into the melted chocolate peanut butter mixture to enhance the flavor.
  4. Coat the Cereal: Pour the chocolate mixture over the cereal in the large bowl. Gently toss with a spatula or spoon until all cereal pieces are evenly coated with the chocolate mixture.
  5. Coat with Powdered Sugar: Transfer the coated cereal into a large zip-top bag or airtight container. Add 1½ cups powdered sugar, seal the container, and shake vigorously until all the coated cereal pieces are thoroughly covered with powdered sugar.
  6. Cool and Set: Spread the coated puppy chow onto parchment paper in a single layer to cool completely and allow the coating to set properly.
  7. Serve or Store: Once cooled, serve immediately or store in an airtight container for up to one week to maintain freshness.

Notes

  • Allow the coating to cool completely before storing to prevent clumping.
  • For extra texture and flavor, add mini peanut butter cups or your favorite candy mix-ins.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week to keep it fresh and crunchy.
