Description

Chicken Divan is a comforting American casserole featuring tender cooked chicken and steamed broccoli combined in a creamy cheese sauce, baked to golden bubbly perfection. This classic dish is easy to prepare and perfect for a hearty family dinner.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 2 cups cooked chicken (shredded or cubed)
  • 3 cups broccoli florets (steamed)
  • 1 can (about 10.5 oz) cream of chicken soup
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

Optional Topping

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tbsp butter (melted)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) to ensure it’s at the right temperature for baking the casserole evenly.
  2. Prepare Broccoli: Steam the broccoli florets until tender but still crisp, then arrange them evenly in a greased baking dish to form the casserole base.
  3. Add Chicken: Layer the cooked, shredded or cubed chicken over the broccoli in the baking dish.
  4. Mix Sauce: In a mixing bowl, combine the cream of chicken soup, sour cream, mayonnaise, milk, garlic powder, and black pepper until smooth and well blended.
  5. Combine and Pour: Pour the creamy sauce mixture evenly over the chicken and broccoli layers, spreading it gently.
  6. Add Cheese: Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese and grated Parmesan cheese on top of the sauce to create a cheesy crust.
  7. Add Optional Topping: If desired, mix the breadcrumbs with melted butter, then sprinkle this mixture over the cheese layer for added texture and flavor.
  8. Bake: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the casserole is bubbly around the edges.
  9. Rest and Serve: Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes after baking to set, then serve warm. It’s delicious on its own or over rice for a heartier meal.

Notes

  • Use rotisserie chicken to save time and add flavor.
  • Serve over rice for a filling complete meal.
  • For a lighter version, substitute sour cream with Greek yogurt.
