Description

A simple and satisfying American casserole featuring ground beef, fluffy cooked rice, and melted cheese, baked to creamy, hearty perfection. This dish is perfect for busy weeknights, combining rich flavors with comforting textures in a quick, one-dish meal.

Ingredients

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 cup diced tomatoes (optional)

Grains and Dairy

  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 cup cream or milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheese

Seasonings

  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: garlic powder
  • Optional: paprika

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) to prepare for baking the casserole.
  2. Cook Ground Beef and Onion: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef along with the chopped onion until browned and fully cooked, breaking up any clumps.
  3. Combine Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked ground beef and onion mixture with the cooked rice, cream or milk, diced tomatoes if using, and season well with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika to taste. Stir until fully blended.
  4. Transfer to Baking Dish: Pour the mixture into a greased baking dish, spreading it evenly.
  5. Add Cheese Topping: Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the top of the beef and rice mixture.
  6. Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and slightly golden.
  7. Serve: Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving warm.

Notes

  • Use brown rice instead of white rice for a healthier, higher fiber option.
  • Incorporate additional vegetables like peas or corn to boost nutrition and add texture.
  • Adjust seasoning according to your taste preferences; adding some chili flakes can add a spicy kick.
