Description

Caramel Apples are a classic fall dessert featuring crisp, fresh apples coated in rich, smooth homemade or melted caramel. These treats are perfect for chilly autumn days and can be personalized with a variety of toppings like chopped nuts, chocolate drizzle, or colorful sprinkles, making them ideal for Halloween parties, festive gatherings, or a sweet snack anytime.

Ingredients

Apples

  • 6 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Gala)
  • 6 wooden sticks

Caramel Coating

  • 14 oz soft caramel candies
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream

Toppings

  • ½ cup chopped peanuts or pecans
  • ¼ cup mini chocolate chips
  • ¼ cup sprinkles
  • Melted chocolate for drizzling (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apples: Wash and thoroughly dry the apples to ensure the caramel sticks well. Remove the stems and insert a wooden stick firmly into the top center of each apple to use as a handle for dipping and eating.
  2. Melt the Caramel: In a microwave-safe bowl or over low heat on the stove, melt the soft caramel candies with the heavy cream, stirring occasionally until the mixture is smooth and creamy, without any lumps.
  3. Dip the Apples: Holding each apple by the wooden stick, dip it into the melted caramel, turning it slowly to coat the apple evenly from top to bottom. Allow excess caramel to drip back into the bowl for a cleaner finish.
  4. Add Toppings: Immediately roll the caramel-coated apple in your choice of toppings such as chopped peanuts, pecans, mini chocolate chips, or sprinkles. Alternatively, place the apples on parchment paper and drizzle warm melted chocolate over the top if desired.
  5. Set the Coating: Place the caramel apples onto a parchment-lined tray and refrigerate them for at least 30 minutes or until the caramel is fully set and firm to the touch.

Notes

  • Use chilled apples to get a thicker caramel coating that sets better.
  • Lightly scrape away the wax coating from store-bought apples to help the caramel adhere better.
  • Store the caramel apples in the refrigerator and consume within 3 days for the best texture and flavor.
