Description

These buttery soft pretzel bites are golden brown, chewy on the outside, and fluffy on the inside. Perfect for snacking, parties, or dipping in your favorite cheese sauce or mustard.

Ingredients

Dough

  • 1½ cups warm water
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 2¼ tsp active dry yeast
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp melted butter

Boiling Solution

  • ⅓ cup baking soda

Topping

  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Coarse salt for topping
  • Extra melted butter for brushing

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: In a bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy to activate the yeast and ensure it’s alive.
  2. Make Dough: Add flour, salt, and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Mix to form a rough dough.
  3. Knead Dough: Knead the dough for 5–7 minutes on a floured surface until it becomes smooth and elastic, developing gluten for texture.
  4. First Rise: Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour until it doubles in size.
  5. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) to have it ready for baking the pretzel bites.
  6. Shape Pretzel Bites: Punch down the dough and divide it into ropes. Cut the ropes into bite-sized pieces, preparing for boiling.
  7. Prepare Baking Soda Bath: Bring a large pot of water to boil and stir in the baking soda until dissolved, creating an alkaline bath for pretzel texture.
  8. Boil Pretzel Bites: Boil the pretzel bites in the baking soda water for 20–30 seconds. This step gives them the characteristic chewy crust.
  9. Arrange on Baking Sheet: Transfer the boiled pretzel bites to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spacing them apart.
  10. Apply Egg Wash and Salt: Brush each pretzel bite with the beaten egg to help them brown, then sprinkle coarse salt on top for flavor and crunch.
  11. Bake: Bake the pretzel bites in the preheated oven for 12–15 minutes until they turn golden brown.
  12. Final Butter Brush: Remove from the oven and immediately brush with extra melted butter to add richness and a glossy finish.

Notes

  • Serve with cheese dip or honey mustard for an extra flavor boost.
  • Do not skip the baking soda bath; it’s essential for the authentic pretzel texture and color.
  • Best enjoyed warm and fresh to experience the perfect chewy and fluffy texture.
