Description
This classic Bobby Flay Salisbury Steak recipe features juicy seasoned ground beef patties cooked on the stovetop and smothered in a rich, savory mushroom onion gravy. Perfect as a hearty comfort meal, it pairs beautifully with mashed potatoes or buttered noodles.
Ingredients
For the Salisbury Steaks
- 1½ lbs ground beef
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
For the Gravy
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the patties: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until evenly combined, then form the mixture into 4 to 6 oval-shaped patties.
- Brown the patties: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Place the patties in the hot skillet and cook until browned on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side. Once browned, remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.
- Cook the vegetables: In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and mushrooms, cooking until softened and fragrant, about 5-7 minutes.
- Make the gravy: Sprinkle the flour over the cooked onions and mushrooms, stirring constantly to coat them evenly. Cook for about 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
- Add liquids and simmer: Gradually whisk in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce to the skillet, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens, approximately 3-5 minutes.
- Finish cooking the patties: Return the browned patties to the skillet with the mushroom gravy. Cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through and tender.
- Serve: Spoon the rich mushroom onion gravy generously over the Salisbury steaks. Serve hot with your choice of mashed potatoes or buttered noodles for a comforting meal.
Notes
- Mashed potatoes make the perfect side dish to complement the rich gravy and tender steaks.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- For an extra creamy touch, add a splash of cream or sour cream to the gravy before serving.
- If you prefer a thicker gravy, increase the flour by 1 tablespoon.
- Ground turkey or chicken can be substituted for beef for a lighter version.
