Description

These Black Bean Burgers are hearty, flavorful, and packed with plant-based protein. Made with black beans, oats, spices, and fresh vegetables, they’re crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and perfect for grilling or pan-frying.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 2 (15-ounce) cans black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • ½ small onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 hamburger buns

Optional Toppings

  • Lettuce
  • Tomato slices
  • Red onion
  • Avocado
  • Pickles
  • Pepper Jack or cheddar cheese
  • Chipotle mayo

Instructions

  1. Mash the Beans: In a large bowl, mash the drained and rinsed black beans with a fork or potato masher, leaving some texture for bite.
  2. Mix Ingredients: Add old-fashioned oats, breadcrumbs, egg, finely diced onion, minced garlic, chopped cilantro, ground cumin, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, and black pepper to the mashed beans. Stir everything together until well combined.
  3. Form Patties: Shape the mixture into 4 equal sized patties, ensuring they hold together well.
  4. Heat the Pan or Grill: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat or alternatively preheat a grill to medium heat.
  5. Cook Patties: Place the patties on the skillet or grill and cook for 5–6 minutes on each side, until they are browned, crispy on the outside and heated through.
  6. Toast Buns: If desired, toast the hamburger buns lightly on the skillet or grill until golden and warm.
  7. Assemble Burgers: Layer the black bean patties on the buns with your choice of optional toppings such as lettuce, tomato, red onion, avocado, pickles, cheese, and chipotle mayo. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Chill the patties in the refrigerator for 20 minutes before cooking to help them hold together better.
  • For a vegan version, substitute the egg with a flax egg (1 tablespoon ground flaxseed mixed with 3 tablespoons water) and use vegan hamburger buns.
  • These burgers pair wonderfully with sides like fries, sweet potato wedges, or a fresh salad.
