Description
A bold twist on the classic sloppy joe, combining savory ground beef with a rich, creamy beer cheese sauce for a hearty and flavorful sandwich perfect for casual meals or game day snacks.
Ingredients
Beef Mixture
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
Beer Cheese Sauce
- 1 cup beer (lager or ale recommended)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 tablespoon flour
- 1 tablespoon butter
Seasoning and Assembly
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 teaspoon mustard
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 4 burger buns, toasted
Instructions
- Cook the beef and onion: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef and chopped onion together until the beef is browned and the onions are softened, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.
- Add garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
- Prepare the roux: In a separate pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Sprinkle in the flour and whisk constantly for about 1-2 minutes to form a smooth roux, which will thicken the sauce.
- Add beer and thicken sauce: Gradually whisk the beer into the roux, continuing to stir until the mixture thickens to a creamy sauce consistency, about 3-5 minutes.
- Melt cheese into sauce: Lower the heat and stir the shredded cheddar cheese into the beer mixture until fully melted and smooth.
- Combine cheese sauce with beef: Pour the beer cheese sauce into the skillet with the cooked beef mixture. Stir well to combine and evenly coat the beef.
- Season the mixture: Add the ketchup and mustard to the skillet, stir through, and season with salt and black pepper to taste. Heat through for another 2 minutes to blend flavors.
- Assemble the sandwiches: Spoon the hot beer cheese sloppy joe mixture onto toasted burger buns and serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.
Notes
- Use your favorite beer for flavor variations; ales add depth, lagers keep it lighter.
- Add diced jalapeños or hot sauce for a spicy kick.
- Serve immediately to maintain the sandwich’s texture and prevent sogginess.
- Can be made ahead and reheated gently on the stovetop.
