Description

A rustic, flavor-packed dish featuring juicy smoked sausage baked with tangy sauerkraut, sweet apples, and onions. This hearty, oven-baked meal is perfect for cozy dinners or traditional Oktoberfest celebrations.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb smoked sausage or bratwurst, sliced
  • 3 cups sauerkraut, drained
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 apple, peeled and thinly sliced

Seasonings & Others

  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp caraway seeds (optional)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil or butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375 °F (190 °C) to get it ready for baking.
  2. Prepare Baking Dish: Grease a baking dish with olive oil or butter to prevent sticking.
  3. Layer Sauerkraut: Spread the drained sauerkraut evenly at the bottom of the prepared baking dish for a flavorful base.
  4. Add Onions and Apples: Layer the sliced onions and peeled thin apple slices evenly over the sauerkraut.
  5. Arrange Sausage: Place the sliced smoked sausage or bratwurst evenly on top of the fruit and vegetables.
  6. Season: Sprinkle the brown sugar and caraway seeds (if using) over the layered ingredients, then drizzle with olive oil or melted butter to add richness.
  7. Bake Covered: Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil to retain moisture and bake for 30 minutes.
  8. Bake Uncovered: Remove the foil and bake an additional 10 minutes to brown the top and develop deeper flavor.
  9. Serve: Allow to cool slightly before serving with your choice of sides such as mashed potatoes or rye bread.

Notes

  • Excellent served with mashed potatoes or rye bread for a complete meal.
  • For added depth of flavor, pour ½ cup of beer over the ingredients before baking.
  • Caraway seeds are optional but add a traditional aromatic touch to the dish.
