Ingredients
Turkey Burger Mixture
- 1 pound ground turkey
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger
- 2 green onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon panko breadcrumbs
- 1 teaspoon honey
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
For Cooking
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, for cooking
For Serving
- 4 burger buns
- 1 cup shredded cabbage or coleslaw mix
- 1 medium carrot, shredded
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 1 teaspoon rice vinegar
- Sesame seeds, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the turkey mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey, soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, green onions, panko breadcrumbs, honey, and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined to prevent the burgers from becoming tough.
- Shape the patties: Divide the turkey mixture into four equal portions and shape each into burger patties about 3/4 inch thick, ensuring they hold together well but aren’t overly compacted.
- Make the slaw: In a small bowl, toss the shredded cabbage and carrot with mayonnaise and rice vinegar until evenly coated. Set the slaw aside to marinate lightly until ready to serve.
- Cook the burgers: Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or grill pan over medium heat. Cook the patties for approximately 5 to 7 minutes on each side, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) to ensure safety and juiciness.
- Toast the buns: During the last minute of cooking, place the burger buns in the skillet or on the grill to lightly toast them, enhancing texture and flavor.
- Assemble the burgers: Place each cooked turkey patty on a toasted bun base. Top with a generous amount of the prepared slaw and sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired for added visual appeal and nuttiness.
- Serve: Serve the burgers immediately with your favorite sides like sweet potato fries, cucumber salad, or steamed vegetables for a well-rounded meal.
Notes
- Avoid overmixing the turkey mixture to keep burgers tender and prevent a dense texture.
- Adjust the flavor by adding sriracha for some heat or extra honey for sweetness according to your preference.
- Use a meat thermometer to avoid overcooking since ground turkey is lean and can dry out easily.
- You can prepare and shape the patties up to 24 hours in advance; store them covered in the refrigerator to save time on the day of cooking.
- For extra crunch and freshness, add toppings like sliced cucumber, shredded lettuce, or pickled red onions.
- Store leftover cooked patties in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days.
