Description

A warm, aromatic mulled wine simmered gently with citrus and a blend of spices, perfect for cozy holiday gatherings and festive occasions. This comforting spiced wine combines red wine, honey, and classic mulling spices to create a fragrant, soothing drink.

Ingredients

Wine Base

  • 1 bottle red wine (preferably dry, such as Merlot or Cabernet)

Sweetener & Spirits

  • 1/4 cup honey or sugar
  • 1/4 cup brandy (optional)

Spices & Fruit

  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 2 star anise

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: Add the bottle of red wine, honey or sugar, sliced orange, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, and brandy (if using) into a medium saucepan.
  2. Simmer Gently: Warm the mixture over low heat, allowing it to simmer gently for 20 to 30 minutes. Be careful not to let it boil, as boiling will evaporate the alcohol and alter the delicate flavors.
  3. Strain and Serve: After simmering, strain the mulled wine through a fine mesh sieve to remove the spices and orange slices. Serve the warm spiced wine immediately in heatproof glasses or mugs for a cozy holiday beverage.

Notes

  • Use dry red wines like Merlot or Cabernet for best flavor balance.
  • Adding fresh cranberries during simmering can enhance the color and add a subtle tartness.
  • Do not boil the wine to preserve the alcohol content and avoid bitterness.
  • Adjust the sweetness to taste by varying the honey or sugar quantity.
