Ingredients
Red Velvet Waffles
- 1½ cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar
- 2 tbsp cocoa powder
- 2 tsp baking powder
- ¼ tsp salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 large egg
- ¼ cup melted butter or oil
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tbsp red food coloring
Cream Cheese Drizzle
- 4 oz cream cheese, softened
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- 2–3 tbsp milk
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat Waffle Iron: Preheat your waffle iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure it’s properly heated before cooking the batter.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt to evenly distribute the leavening agents and cocoa powder.
- Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, mix the buttermilk, large egg, melted butter or oil, vanilla extract, and red food coloring until well blended, creating a smooth, vibrant red batter base.
- Mix Batter: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently stir just until combined. Be careful not to overmix to maintain light and fluffy waffles.
- Cook Waffles: Lightly grease the preheated waffle iron. Pour the batter onto the hot surface and cook until the waffles are crisp on the outside and fluffy inside, about 3-5 minutes depending on your waffle iron.
- Prepare Cream Cheese Drizzle: In a small bowl, whisk together softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and pourable.
- Serve: Drizzle the cream cheese glaze generously over warm waffles and serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.
Notes
- Do not overmix the batter to keep waffles light and fluffy.
- For extra crunch, cook waffles slightly longer than usual.
- Add chocolate chips to the batter for a dessert version with additional texture.
- Store leftover cream cheese drizzle in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; rewhisk before using.
