Description
Light and airy French choux pastry puffs filled with luscious cream and topped with warm chocolate sauce. Profiteroles are a timeless dessert perfect for parties, holidays, or special occasions.
Ingredients
For the Choux Pastry (Pâte à Choux):
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick)
- 1 tbsp granulated sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 4 large eggs
For the Filling:
- 2 cups heavy cream (chilled)
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
For the Chocolate Sauce:
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (or chopped chocolate)
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 tbsp unsalted butter
Instructions
- Make the choux pastry: Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a saucepan, bring water, butter, sugar, and salt to a boil. Add flour, stirring vigorously until dough pulls away from the sides. Transfer to a bowl; let cool. Beat in eggs one at a time. Pipe or spoon mounds onto baking sheet. Bake for 20-25 minutes.
- Prepare the filling: Whip heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla until stiff peaks form. Transfer to a piping bag fitted with a small tip.
- Fill the profiteroles: Pipe cream inside each puff.
- Make the chocolate sauce: Heat cream; pour over chocolate and butter. Stir until smooth.
- Serve: Drizzle profiteroles with warm chocolate sauce. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Can be filled with custard or ice cream instead of whipped cream.
- Puffs can be baked ahead and stored for 1-2 days.
- For extra crispiness, reheat unfilled puffs at 300°F (150°C) for 5 minutes before filling.
