Description

These Grilled Cheese Patty Melts combine juicy beef patties, caramelized onions, and melty cheese sandwiched between buttery grilled bread. A classic diner-style comfort food that’s crispy on the outside and irresistibly cheesy inside.

Ingredients

Beef Patties

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder

Caramelized Onions

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter (for onions)

Sandwich Assembly

  • 8 slices rye, sourdough, or Texas toast bread
  • 8 slices Swiss or American cheese
  • 4 tbsp butter, softened (for grilling)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize Onions: Heat a skillet over medium heat and melt 2 tablespoons butter. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring often, for 15–20 minutes until they become golden and caramelized. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  2. Prepare Beef Patties: Form the ground beef into 4 thin oval patties. Season both sides with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder evenly.
  3. Cook Patties: In the same skillet used for onions, cook the beef patties over medium-high heat for 3–4 minutes on each side until fully cooked through and browned.
  4. Butter Bread Slices: Spread softened butter on one side of each slice of bread. This side will be grilled to golden perfection.
  5. Assemble Sandwiches: On the non-buttered side of each bread slice, layer cheese, a cooked beef patty, caramelized onions, and more cheese. Top with another bread slice, buttered-side out.
  6. Grill Sandwiches: Using a skillet or griddle over medium heat, cook each sandwich for about 3–4 minutes per side, pressing slightly, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted thoroughly.
  7. Serve: Remove the sandwiches from the pan, slice in half, and serve hot for the best melty, crispy experience.

Notes

  • Swiss cheese is classic, but cheddar or provolone also pair well.
  • Keep the heat moderate to prevent the bread from burning before the cheese melts.
  • For extra flavor, add a spoonful of burger sauce or thousand island dressing inside the sandwich.
  • Leftover patties reheat well, making quick meals easy to prepare.
