Ingredients
Potatoes
- 3 large potatoes, peeled and grated
Fat for Cooking
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Seasoning
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Prepare the Potatoes: Peel and grate 3 large potatoes. Then, use a clean towel or cheesecloth to squeeze out as much excess moisture as possible to ensure your hash browns get crispy.
- Heat the Fat: In a frying pan over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter and add 1 tablespoon of olive oil, heating them until hot and combined.
- Cook the Hash Browns – First Side: Add the grated potatoes to the pan and press them down evenly to form a flat layer. Cook undisturbed for 5 to 7 minutes until the bottom turns a golden brown and crispy.
- Flip and Cook Second Side: Carefully flip the hash browns over and cook for another 5 to 7 minutes on the other side until equally golden and cooked through.
- Season and Serve: Remove from pan, season with ½ teaspoon salt and ¼ teaspoon black pepper while hot, and serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.
Notes
- Removing excess moisture from the potatoes is essential to achieving a crispy texture.
- Avoid overcrowding the pan to allow proper browning and even cooking.
- Use medium heat to prevent burning while ensuring the hash browns cook through.
- Pressing the potatoes firmly helps form a compact, uniform hash brown.
