Description

This garlic butter steak and cheddar potato bake is a rich, hearty, and comforting dish featuring tender sirloin steak bites baked with creamy, thinly sliced potatoes, sharp cheddar, and melty mozzarella cheese, all enveloped in a flavorful garlic butter cream sauce. Ideal for a cozy family dinner or weekend meal.

Ingredients

Steak

  • 1 lb sirloin steak, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Potatoes

  • 2 lbs russet or Yukon gold potatoes, thinly sliced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

Garlic Butter Sauce

  • 4 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 5 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup beef broth

Cheese Layer

  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Optional Garnish

  • Fresh parsley or chives, chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prep: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish thoroughly to prevent sticking and ensure easy clean-up.
  2. Season potatoes: In a large bowl, toss the thinly sliced potatoes with salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder to evenly coat them with seasoning for optimal flavor.
  3. Prepare garlic butter sauce: Combine melted butter, minced garlic, heavy cream, and beef broth in a separate bowl, mixing well to create a rich and savory sauce.
  4. Layer base potatoes: Arrange half of the seasoned potatoes evenly in the bottom of the prepared baking dish to create a sturdy base layer.
  5. Add cheese layer: Sprinkle half of the shredded sharp cheddar and mozzarella cheese over the potatoes to add cheesy richness.
  6. Add steak: Evenly distribute the bite-sized steak pieces on top of the cheese layer, lightly seasoning them with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Top with remaining potatoes: Place the remaining seasoned potatoes over the steak pieces to cover the filling layers.
  8. Pour sauce and cover: Evenly pour the garlic butter cream sauce over all the layers, then tightly cover the baking dish with foil to trap moisture during baking.
  9. Bake covered: Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes to cook the potatoes and steak thoroughly while infusing flavors together.
  10. Uncover and add remaining cheese: Remove the foil carefully and sprinkle the remaining cheddar and mozzarella cheese evenly on top.
  11. Final bake uncovered: Continue baking uncovered for an additional 15–20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the cheese topping is bubbly and golden brown.
  12. Garnish and rest: Remove from the oven, garnish with chopped fresh parsley or chives for a fresh color and flavor, and let the bake rest for 5–10 minutes before serving to allow flavors to settle and the dish to firm up.

Notes

  • Slice potatoes thinly and evenly to ensure uniform cooking.
  • Substitute cheddar with Colby Jack or Monterey Jack cheese for a different flavor profile.
  • Use ribeye or strip steak instead of sirloin for extra tenderness and richness.
  • For crispier edges, broil the bake for 2–3 minutes at the end of cooking.
  • Leftovers reheat well and make great next-day meals.
