Description
A rich, buttery, and soft chocolate brioche bread with a tender crumb, perfect for breakfast, sandwiches, or desserts. This French classic combines the delicate sweetness of brioche with the indulgence of chocolate, resulting in a luxurious homemade treat.
Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 packet active dry yeast (about 2 1/4 tsp)
- 1/2 tsp salt
Wet Ingredients
- 1/2 cup warm milk (about 110°F/43°C)
- 3 large eggs
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips or chopped chocolate (optional, for chocolate flavor incorporation)
Instructions
- Activate Yeast: In a bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast in warm milk and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
- Combine Ingredients: Add sugar, eggs, and a portion of the flour to the yeast mixture. Stir to combine and start forming a dough.
- Knead Dough: Gradually add the softened butter while kneading the dough until it becomes smooth and elastic. If using chocolate chips or chopped chocolate, fold them in gently at this stage.
- First Rise: Cover the dough with a clean towel or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 2 hours, until it doubles in size.
- Shape Dough: Once risen, punch down the dough gently to release air. Shape the dough into a loaf and place it in a greased loaf pan.
- Second Rise: Cover and let the dough rise for another 30 to 45 minutes until it has puffed up again.
- Bake: Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Optionally, brush the top with egg wash for a glossy finish. Bake the loaf for 25 to 30 minutes until the crust turns golden brown and a skewer inserted comes out clean.
- Cool: Remove from oven and allow to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
- Brush with egg wash before baking for a shiny, golden crust.
- The dough is very soft; chilling it slightly before shaping can make it easier to handle.
- Adding chocolate chips or chopped chocolate is optional but enhances the chocolate flavor.
- Store leftover bread in an airtight container to maintain freshness.
