Description

A rich, buttery, and soft chocolate brioche bread with a tender crumb, perfect for breakfast, sandwiches, or desserts. This French classic combines the delicate sweetness of brioche with the indulgence of chocolate, resulting in a luxurious homemade treat.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (about 2 1/4 tsp)
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup warm milk (about 110°F/43°C)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips or chopped chocolate (optional, for chocolate flavor incorporation)

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: In a bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast in warm milk and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
  2. Combine Ingredients: Add sugar, eggs, and a portion of the flour to the yeast mixture. Stir to combine and start forming a dough.
  3. Knead Dough: Gradually add the softened butter while kneading the dough until it becomes smooth and elastic. If using chocolate chips or chopped chocolate, fold them in gently at this stage.
  4. First Rise: Cover the dough with a clean towel or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 2 hours, until it doubles in size.
  5. Shape Dough: Once risen, punch down the dough gently to release air. Shape the dough into a loaf and place it in a greased loaf pan.
  6. Second Rise: Cover and let the dough rise for another 30 to 45 minutes until it has puffed up again.
  7. Bake: Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Optionally, brush the top with egg wash for a glossy finish. Bake the loaf for 25 to 30 minutes until the crust turns golden brown and a skewer inserted comes out clean.
  8. Cool: Remove from oven and allow to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Brush with egg wash before baking for a shiny, golden crust.
  • The dough is very soft; chilling it slightly before shaping can make it easier to handle.
  • Adding chocolate chips or chopped chocolate is optional but enhances the chocolate flavor.
  • Store leftover bread in an airtight container to maintain freshness.
