Description

A flavorful Japanese-style rice bowl featuring tender thinly sliced beef cooked in a fragrant shiso garlic soy sauce. This simple yet umami-rich dish is served over steamed rice and garnished with fresh shiso leaves, making for a satisfying and authentic meal.

Ingredients

Beef Donburi Ingredients

  • 300g thinly sliced beef
  • 2 cups cooked rice
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp mirin
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 onion, sliced
  • Fresh shiso leaves, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the garlic: Heat the vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat and sauté the minced garlic until it becomes fragrant, releasing its aromatic flavors into the oil.
  2. Sauté onions: Add the sliced onion to the pan and cook until softened and translucent, enhancing the dish’s sweetness and depth.
  3. Cook the beef: Add the thinly sliced beef to the pan and cook, stirring occasionally until the beef turns brown and is cooked through.
  4. Make the sauce: Stir in the soy sauce, mirin, and sugar, combining them well with the cooked beef and onions.
  5. Simmer: Allow the mixture to simmer gently for 3 to 5 minutes, letting the sauce thicken slightly and fully coat the beef.
  6. Assemble the bowl: Spoon the cooked beef and sauce over steaming hot cooked rice.
  7. Garnish and serve: Sprinkle the chopped fresh shiso leaves on top to add a fragrant herbal note before serving.

Notes

  • If shiso leaves are unavailable, substitute with fresh basil for a similar aromatic effect.
  • For extra richness and texture, add a soft-poached or soft-boiled egg on top of the bowl.
