Description

Beef Donburi with Shiso Garlic Soy Sauce is a quick and flavorful Japanese rice bowl featuring tender, thinly sliced beef cooked in a savory garlic soy sauce infused with fresh shiso leaves. This aromatic dish combines the rich umami of soy and mirin with the unique herbal notes of shiso, served atop steaming Japanese rice for a satisfying and easy-to-make main meal.

Ingredients

Beef and Sauce

  • 1 lb thinly sliced beef
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon mirin
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

Rice and Garnishes

  • 2 cups cooked Japanese rice
  • 68 fresh shiso leaves, thinly sliced

Instructions

  1. Heat oil: Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat until hot and shimmering.
  2. Sauté garlic: Add the minced garlic to the skillet and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant but not browned, releasing its aromatic flavors.
  3. Cook beef: Add the thinly sliced beef to the skillet and stir-fry, cooking until the beef is browned and tender, about 3-5 minutes depending on thickness.
  4. Add sauce ingredients: Stir in 2 tablespoons soy sauce, 1 tablespoon mirin, 1 teaspoon sugar, and 1 teaspoon sesame oil to the beef. Mix well to coat the meat evenly.
  5. Simmer sauce: Continue cooking the beef mixture for another 2-3 minutes, allowing the sauce to reduce slightly and thicken, enhancing the flavor concentration.
  6. Assemble bowls: Spoon the warm cooked Japanese rice evenly into two serving bowls.
  7. Top with beef: Spoon the beef and shiso garlic soy sauce mixture generously over the rice in each bowl.
  8. Garnish and serve: Sprinkle the thinly sliced fresh shiso leaves over the top of each bowl and serve immediately while hot.

Notes

  • If fresh shiso leaves are unavailable, substitute with fresh basil leaves to provide a similar herbal freshness.
  • For extra richness, add a soft-poached or soft-boiled egg on top of the beef donburi before serving.
  • To boost the flavor and texture, sprinkle toasted sesame seeds on the finished dish as a garnish.
