Description
Nourishing, collagen-rich beef bone broth that is perfect for sipping on its own or using as a flavorful base for soups and stews. This easy-to-make broth extracts deep flavors and nutrients through slow roasting and gentle simmering, resulting in a rich, comforting liquid packed with health benefits.
Ingredients
Beef Bones
- 2 lbs beef bones (marrow or knuckle)
Vegetables
- 1 onion, quartered
- 2 carrots, chopped
- 2 celery stalks
Liquids and Seasonings
- 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 12 cups water
Instructions
- Roast the Bones: Preheat your oven to 400 °F (200 °C). Arrange the beef bones on a baking sheet and roast them for 25 minutes. This step deepens the flavor by caramelizing the bones and releasing rich aromas.
- Combine Ingredients: Transfer the roasted bones to a large pot. Add the quartered onion, chopped carrots, celery stalks, apple cider vinegar, and 12 cups of water to the pot. The vinegar helps extract minerals and collagen from the bones.
- Simmer the Broth: Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over low heat. Maintain a low simmer for 12 to 24 hours, allowing the flavors to meld and the collagen to fully release. Avoid boiling to keep the broth clear and flavorful.
- Strain and Store: After simmering, carefully strain the broth through a fine mesh sieve to remove solids. Let it cool, then store in airtight containers. The broth can be refrigerated for up to 5 days or frozen for longer storage.
Notes
- Add garlic, bay leaf, or peppercorns during simmering for richer, more complex flavor.
- Skim foam occasionally during simmering for a clearer broth.
- Use marrow bones for richer, more gelatinous broth or knuckle bones for good collagen extraction.
- Broth can be enjoyed on its own or used as a nutritious base for soups, stews, and sauces.
- Store extra broth in ice cube trays for convenient portioning.
