Description
A warm and wholesome breakfast made with tender pearl barley, sweetened naturally with honey and topped with fresh mixed berries. This comforting porridge is rich in fiber and nutrients, offering a delicious and healthy way to start your day.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1 cup pearl barley
- 3 cups water or milk
- 1 tablespoon honey (plus extra for serving)
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries)
- 2 tablespoons chopped nuts (optional)
Instructions
- Rinse the Barley: Rinse the pearl barley thoroughly under cold running water to remove any impurities and excess starch.
- Combine and Boil: In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed barley with 3 cups of water or milk. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil over medium-high heat.
- Simmer the Barley: Reduce the heat to low and let the barley simmer gently for 25 to 30 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking, until the barley is tender and has absorbed much of the liquid.
- Add Flavor: Stir in 1 tablespoon of honey, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract into the porridge to infuse it with warmth and sweetness.
- Serve: Spoon the porridge into serving bowls. Top with fresh mixed berries and, if desired, sprinkle chopped nuts on top for added texture and nutrients.
- Finish and Enjoy: Drizzle additional honey on top for extra sweetness if preferred, then serve the porridge warm for a comforting breakfast.
Notes
- Using milk instead of water creates a creamier texture and richer flavor.
- Frozen berries are a convenient alternative and work perfectly if fresh berries are not available.
- Chopped nuts add a nice crunch and boost the protein and healthy fats content.
- Adjust the sweetness by varying the amount of honey according to your preference.
