Description
Bangers and Mash is a classic British comfort dish featuring juicy pork sausages served over creamy mashed potatoes and topped with a rich, savory onion gravy. This hearty and satisfying meal is simple to prepare, perfect for a cozy dinner that highlights traditional British flavors.
Ingredients
Sausages and Mash
- 6 pork sausages
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 2 large potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/3 cup milk
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Onion Gravy
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 tablespoon flour
- 1 1/2 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Boil Potatoes: Place peeled and cubed potatoes in a pot of salted water. Boil for about 15 minutes or until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.
- Mash Potatoes: Drain the boiled potatoes well and return them to the pot. Add butter, milk, salt, and black pepper. Mash the potatoes until smooth, creamy, and well combined. Keep warm.
- Cook Sausages: Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the pork sausages and cook for 12 to 15 minutes, turning them occasionally to brown all sides and ensure they are thoroughly cooked.
- Prepare Onion Gravy: In a separate pan, melt butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and cook slowly until onions are soft and caramelized, which should take around 8 to 10 minutes.
- Thicken Gravy: Stir in the flour with the onions and cook for 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
- Add Broth and Season: Gradually pour in the beef broth while continuously stirring to prevent lumps. Continue cooking until the gravy thickens, then add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper to taste. Stir well.
- Serve: Plate the mashed potatoes, arrange the cooked sausages on top, and generously pour the warm onion gravy over the dish. Serve immediately for best flavor.
Notes
- Traditional British pork sausages are recommended for authentic flavor and juiciness.
- Serve with peas or other seasonal vegetables on the side for a classic presentation.
- For a smoother mash, use a potato ricer or food mill.
- Adjust gravy thickness by adding more broth or cooking longer.
