- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp caraway seeds (optional)
- 1 tbsp olive oil or butter
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375 °F (190 °C) to prepare for baking.
- Prepare Baking Dish: Grease a baking dish with butter or oil to prevent sticking, then evenly spread the drained sauerkraut across the bottom of the dish.
- Layer Onions and Apples: Arrange the sliced onions and thinly sliced apples over the sauerkraut, adding sweetness and depth to the dish.
- Add Sausages: Place the sliced smoked sausages or bratwurst evenly on top of the layered sauerkraut, onions, and apples.
- Season: Sprinkle the brown sugar and optional caraway seeds evenly over the sausage layer. Drizzle with olive oil or melted butter to add richness.
- Bake Covered: Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
- Bake Uncovered: Remove the foil and continue baking uncovered for an additional 10 minutes, or until the sausage is browned and slightly crisp on top.
Notes
- Great when served with mashed potatoes or hearty rye bread for a complete meal.
- For added depth of flavor, pour ½ cup of beer over the mixture before baking.
