Description

A warm, comforting apple dessert featuring tender, spiced apples baked under a golden, buttery oat crumble topping. This classic American apple crisp is perfect served with vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce, or whipped cream for a cozy fall treat.

Ingredients

For the Apple Filling:

  • 6 cups apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (Granny Smith + Honeycrisp work well)
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • ½ cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg

For the Oat Topping:

  • 1 cup (100 g) old-fashioned rolled oats
  • ¾ cup (95 g) all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup (150 g) brown sugar, packed
  • ½ cup (115 g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prepare for baking the apple crisp.
  2. Prepare the apple filling: In a large bowl, toss the peeled, cored, and sliced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, flour, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg until the apples are thoroughly coated. Then spread the mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.
  3. Make the oat topping: In a separate bowl, combine rolled oats, all-purpose flour, packed brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Use a pastry cutter or fork to cut the cold, cubed unsalted butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Top the apples: Evenly sprinkle the oat topping mixture over the spiced apple filling in the baking dish.
  5. Bake the crisp: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the oat topping has turned a golden brown color.
  6. Cool and serve: Allow the apple crisp to cool slightly before serving warm. It pairs beautifully with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or caramel sauce.

Notes

  • Serve with vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce, or whipped cream for added indulgence.
  • Add ½ cup chopped pecans or walnuts to the oat topping for extra texture and crunch.
  • Try mixing cranberries or pears with the apples for a flavorful variation.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days; reheat before serving to enjoy warm.
