Description
A sweet-savory twist on the classic grilled cheese sandwich featuring crisp Honeycrisp or Fuji apple slices paired with sharp cheddar cheese, all melted between golden, buttery sourdough or whole-grain bread. This easy-to-make stovetop grilled cheese is perfect for a comforting fall lunch or quick meal.
Ingredients
Bread & Butter
- 4 slices sourdough or whole-grain bread
- 1 tbsp butter, softened
Fillings
- 1 apple (Honeycrisp or Fuji), thinly sliced
- 4 oz sharp cheddar cheese, sliced
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Bread: Butter one side of each slice of bread evenly to ensure a golden, crispy exterior when cooked.
- Assemble the Sandwich: On the unbuttered sides of two bread slices, layer the sharp cheddar cheese and thinly sliced apples. If desired, spread Dijon mustard on one of the bread slices for an extra tangy flavor before pressing the sandwich together with the buttered sides facing out.
- Cook the Sandwich: Heat a skillet over medium heat. Place the sandwich in the skillet and cook for 2–3 minutes on one side until the bread is golden brown and the cheese starts to melt.
- Flip and Finish: Carefully flip the sandwich and cook for another 2–3 minutes on the other side until it is equally golden brown and the cheese is fully melted.
- Serve: Remove the sandwich from the skillet, slice in half, and serve warm for the best melty, crispy experience.
Notes
- Add a few spinach leaves or caramelized onions inside the sandwich for an extra layer of flavor and texture.
- Try substituting the cheddar with smoked gouda for a different, smoky taste.
